Practical Information
What is known about COVID-19 (Coronavirus)?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in both humans and animals. There are currently seven strains of human coronaviruses that have been identified. Sometimes, new coronaviruses emerge.
The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) coronavirus causes SARS and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus causes MERS. The novel coronavirus, COVID-19 is one of seven types of known human coronaviruses. COVID-19, like the MERS and SARS coronaviruses, likely evolved from a virus previously found in animals.
In 2019, a new strain of human coronavirus emerged, COVID-19. Illnesses associated with this virus were first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.
How COVID-19 Spreads?
1/ Person-to-person spread
The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus.
2/ Spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or object
It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Recommandations to Avoid infection from Coronavirus
- Wash your hands on a regular basis
- Caugh or sneeze in your elbow, not your hands
- Use disposable tissues
- Wear disposable face masks
